Private: Your Creative Spirit is Calling!

Our souls have so much to teach us. But first, we must know how to listen.

For years, I silenced my creative longings by telling myself I didn’t have time or that my creative musings were silly or impractical. Or just not very good. I would talk myself out of an idea before I’d given myself a chance to explore its potential.

To our souls, that’s like pouring ice water on a blazing, bright fire meant to keep us warm and glowing.

Are you in touch with your creative longings?

If your answer is no, maybe it’s because you think that being creative is about being technically skilled at art, music, writing, acting, photography or some other form of expression. And so any creative inspiration or idea you might have, is quickly followed by the thought “I can’t do that.” Or “I’m not good at writing… not like my friend.”

Our creativity is SO much more than skills and knowledge. When you tap into your creative longings, you’ll find yourself feeling greater energy and joy. That’s because your soul was behind the callings all along and lovingly hoping you would listen.

Last year my creative callings grew louder and I couldn’t resist listening to my heart and soul any longer. I began saying yes and opening new doors.

In the beginning, I was scared and resistant to make time and space to honor those creative longings. Now, I’m so grateful and happy I listened. I dropped some activities to free up time and stepped outside my comfort zone. I took up bellydancing, created mixed media art pieces, and co-created the best birthday party of my adult life where we each made sparkling tiaras that reflected our innermost gifts.

All this led me to discover an even greater gift this past year… a powerful truth about our creative longings.

Our inspirations and ideas are our soul’s way of opening us to our unlimited potential.

The impulse to create is vibrantly alive within each of us EVEN when we think we aren’t creative or good enough. Our creativity is our soul’s unlimited potential made real and visible. It is always present and awaits only one thing: our willingness to engage with it.

I learned that the question is not “Am I creative?” My deeper discovery and invitation to you is to ask yourself “What is my soul wanting me to express next… what ideas or inspirations are calling me?”

And the secret to letting your creative spirit shine through is to give yourself permission to listen with love and curiosity. When you find yourself with an idea, take it one step at a time.

We see that in the simple play of children. They pick up a crayon and start drawing or pretend they are a lion and roar. Or they have an idea to build a fort and turn blankets and chairs into a hideaway one blanket at a time.

Make it easy for yourself to take the first step. If you long to write a book, sit down and start with one paragraph. If you dream of having a way to make a bigger difference in the world, imagine what a day in your life would feel and look like. If you’re inspired by the idea of having a garden this spring, begin with a plant in your favorite pot! Creativity blooms in the same way a garden begins with a single seed.

Here are a few tips for cultivating your creative longings into soulful connection.

• Give yourself permission to listen to your longings with an open mind and heart. Trust your soul when you hear the creative callings.

• Begin with a small step and a child’s sense of play, letting go of any judgment or expectations.

• Carve out time even if it means occasionally saying “no” to activities like watching tv or being on Facebook.

• Be willing to try something new… especially if it’s outside your comfort zone. It’s okay to be nervous or scared at first.

Following these tips will help you tap into more joy, flow and abundance in your life!

The truth is that when you listen and act on your callings, you are igniting a powerful connection with your soul. This vital energy sparks other areas of your life!
